The main page shows all Olympic National Park (ONP) trails in red superimposed over a Landsat Image. The lower right "Toggle Map" button can be used to show the more detailed maps that are available to display, save (i.e. right click on the new map image when it appears) or print when the user mouse clicks on the Landsat image over a trail she is interested in. These more detailed maps include: Official Park map: Large area coverage suitable of general planning but this map is NOT designed to support serous hiking or backpacking by itself. 250,000 USGS topographic map: Major trails (e.g. well maintained along much of its length) are highlighted in cyan (more detail is available on the major trails via trail Info web pag) and minor trails (e.g. short nature trails) and primitive trails with limited maintenance are highlighted in gray. This map was provided to help provide an overview of potential hikes but, like the park map, it is NOT intended to support backcountry hiking by itself. 24,000 USGS topographic map: Unlike the 250,000 scale USGS map ALL trails are highlighted and the detail offered by these maps may be of direct use to backcountry hiking. There are two versions of this map. The easiest to read is the 5m pixel version but it covers the smallest area. The 10m pixel version covers a larger area but is harder to read. In all cases the ratio of width to height is designed for printing on a home printer. The expectation is that a user would select and print out a customized series of maps along his intended route (adjusting the amount of overlap between map segments according to individual needs)and store each map segment in a plastic jacket to create a ‘book’ of map segments covering all areas of interest. Each map also prints out the width of the map in terms of miles in the upper left hand corner (i.e. the width of the map acts like a map scale). |
